SURVIVING HIGHSCHOOL

If you're anything like me, school is just an endless cycle of  'I need to make it through this week', every week. I hate school. Don't get me wrong, I love seeing my friends and learning new things everyday.I hate school because we get judged for how well we can memorise our textbooks. We go to school 6-7 hours a day and take classes that probably won't benefit us in the long run and go home and do 3 hours of homework. We learn about covalent bonds and quadratic equations and how to prove triangles similar? Totally going to help us when we are struggling in real life situations. On the other hand teaching us how to be better people might be slightly beneficial given that  more than half the people in high school are 99.9% bitch.
Now that we've established my hatred, reality is there's nothing we can do about it. The system is never going to change and neither are the people around us. We have almost 2 weeks to the over exaggerated, time-to-put-in-hard work, glorious-but-not-really GRADE 10. So I decided to put together a sort of survival guide. So here's me pretending I know exactly what to do when I walk into school on the 2nd.
But really, you might want to read the whole thing.

  1. You just do it. You force yourself to get up. You force yourself to put one foot in front of the other and you refuse to let it get to you. You fight. You cry. You curse. Then you go about the business of living. There's no other way.
  2. Never expect anything. All it leads to, is disappointment.
  3. Don't dumb yourself down. It doesn't make you look any better. It makes you look, well, dumb.
  4. When you have things to do, which I'm sure you always do but instead you're online watching motivational videos and looking for Tumblr quotes that you hope will inspire you to conquer the pile of work on your desk. NO. When you know you have something to do, do it. Whatever it may be, however big or small. And the feeling of accomplishment you get afterwards is incomparable to anything else.
  5. Understand that unexpected things will always happen in life and with that the only control you have is how you choose to handle them.
  6. When entrusted with a secret, keep it.
  7. The perfect seat in class is the one surrounded by your best friend, a really funny cool kid, and a smart person.
  8. Make a To-do list everyday. Make sure it's do-able and doesn't sound like: Do all homework, Study math and physics and chemistry and history, Write 3 essays, Sleep at 11, Lose weight, Make parents proud, Decorate room, Make a painting, Bake cake. - No. Because we both know you can't.
  9. Remember that highschool isn't the make or break. We all will be out of here in no time and whatever happened won't matter anymore. No one's going to remember how you tripped in the hall or how your relationship failed or the grade you got on that physics test. The best thing about life is that nothing is constant- neither the good things nor the bad things. So relax. If you're one of those people walking in the halls wondering if everyone's judging you- everyone else is probably thinking if you're judging them too.
  10. Be a good listener- your ears will never get you into trouble.
  11. Be kind. Everyone's fighting their own battles and if someone's being rude to you they've probably just had a rough day. Before you assume always analyse. Nothing is ever as it seems.
  12. One day you'll look back and laugh at how much you let all this matter to you.
  13. You could hate a teacher all you want- because of her accent, because of her physique, because of her attitude. End of the day, she's at school just as long as you are and SHE is the one standing in front of a class of teenagers teaching them something they don't care about so show some respect. All you have to do is listen. Don't make it harder than it has to be.
  14. It's the oldest story in the world. One day you're fifteen and planning for "someday", and quietly, without you even noticing, that "someday" is today and that "someday" becomes yesterday, and this is your life. Don't waste a day.
  15. Don't let who you're with change who you are.
  16. Of course people are going to judge you. That's what they do. Don't be surprised.
  17. When studying for something, pretend like you have to teach it to someone and not just write a test. That way you'll pay more attention.
  18. Complaining about a problem without posing a solution is called whining.
  19. Caring for yourself is not self-indulgent
  20. If you have to sit at the back of the class, avoid conflict, listen to the teacher and be single for a year to get the grades you want. Do it. Everyone says YOLO and what not. 10th grade only comes around once too. Choose your battles.
  21. If you allow people to make more emotional withdrawals than deposits, all you will be left with is negativity. Know when to shut people out and when to let them in.
  22. People aren't smart. They become smart. So stop comparing yourself to that other girl/guy over there getting perfect grades and start doing something about it. Calling them a nerd doesn't make them any less smarter than they are and it definitely doesn't make you seem any cooler either.
HIGH SCHOOL- Where self-esteem, innocence and dreams go to die. Trying not to end negatively, we will miss highschool one day, and I will always hate the movie industry for convincing me- and others alike- that Highschool Musical is how school really is. Cos Nobody's dancing on cafeteria tables and singing like nothing matters in my school.

Just a few of my thoughts on school compiled into one post. It's back to school and I thought it might be helpful to know that we're all going through the same thing. Dreading school. And the homework. And the sleepless nights. And the whole environment.
Let me know if this helped in anyway and how you survive every academic year.

    2. i absolutely suck at it. i mean it sounds so great like create a to-do list with boxes to tick and what could possibly go wrong except for the fact that you've written mission impossibles and at the end of the week you're just unsatisfied with your life

  2. I can't really say myself that i hated high school. If you have proper time management then that's half the problems done and the other half is not judging others and not being secluded with only one particular group or seat at the cafeteria. But the points you said are pretty good.
